Muscles and Body Parts Used in Kayaking

Kayaking is a fun loving and adventurous activity which makes you fit and healthy. Although it looks just like a form of the game kayaking actually is one of the best excise forms that keep on building the strength of the upper body. There are many different muscles and body parts used in kayaking.

During paddling, arm muscles along with the shoulder and the back come into use. It is not that only full day kayaking will entertain the benefits of Kayaking, even a short trip or kayak for leisure can burn a lot of calories. The reason is that a lot of muscles are used.

The various muscles being used in the kayaking are as follows:

Rotator Cuff:

During the rotation, the rotator cuff helps in controlling the joints of shoulder muscles. The various muscles are infraspinatus, subscapularis, teres minor and supraspinatus. For all the manoeuvres in kayaking, the rotator cuff is being used. These manoeuvres can put the cuff under a certain form of stress. Therefore, regularly do exercises that can prevent wear and tear.

Trapezius:

There are three areas in which the trapezius muscles are divided namely the upper fibers, middle and the lower fibers. Movement of the shoulder blades towards the spinal part is one of the important tasks of the trapezius muscles. The shoulder blade can be moved up and down with the help of trapezius. During the task of forwarding strokes and rolling, trapezius muscles are used in kayaking.

Rhomboids:

With the help of rhomboids, the scapula is connected to the vertebra. Rhomboids are responsible for pulling off the shoulder blades towards mid-body area. The rhomboid muscles come into entertainment for the task of forwarding strokes.

Other Body Parts Being Used For Kayaking

All the parts of the body whether muscles, bones or joins etc. are used in the task of kayaking whether one way or other.

  • Arms are used very importantly used for the task of propelling of the kayak. When you are holding the paddles of the kayak, the arms should be kept apart as the width of the shoulder. The arms are responsible for power transfer that is being generated with the help of rotation and the core muscles.
  • Lower back is another important part that is being used for the kayaking. Lower back is in association with the muscles that are used for kayaking. Before going out for the kayaking adventure, properly set up the kayak so that the lower back is securely cradled.
  • Legs are one of the important body parts which are involved in kayaking although the beginners cannot notice its use. Legs are involved in providing a connection between the kayak and the canoe. Legs in conjunction with the lower back help in turning, rolling and bracing the kayak.
