CBD pet treats for dogs and cats are all the buzz around the pet world in 2018.  Not only are they scrumdiddlyumptious; they’re packed with all natural ingredients that benefit general health and help treat many medical conditions.

Here is just a few of those medical conditions CBD treats can help treat: anxiety, behavioral issues, inflammation, epilepsy, and appetite regulation. That is just the start of what CBD can do.

Homemade CBD Pet Treats vs Commercial CBD Pet Treats

There is no right or wrong decision when it comes to whether you want to make CBD Pet treats for your furbaby or just buy them. Buying them saves you time, and you’ll still have to buy CBD oil if you’re planning to make the treats at home. Botahemp.com is a good place to buy CBD oil. You can also get CBD hemp extract based products there.

However, there are lots of pros if you want to spend time making them — which is pretty easy as you can see in the recipe section. You can make treats that cater to your pet’s palate, which is wonderful for picky eaters — *whispers cats*.

As well, you will have total control over dosage and how much you give them. For most pets, there is little over the dosage. CBD is non-toxic, and the sky's the limit when it comes to how much you can give them — or take for yourself.

However, if your pet is on anticonvulsant medication or a prescription drug metabolized in the liver, you’ll want to use caution with high doses of CBD. CBD is known to temporarily inhibit a group of enzymes in the liver that breaks down certain pharmaceuticals.

With higher dosages, CBD may inhibit too many CYP enzymes, and by delaying the breakdown of pharmaceuticals their potency may raise. Some patients can’t afford this as the pharmaceutical may be at a dosage point where going up would cause side effects. By making your own CBD treats, you ensure your dog is getting the precise amount of CBD to avoid any drug interactions.

Making CBD Pet Treats For Your Pets At Home

With a few simple tips making CBD treats at home is a peace of treat — sorry, couldn’t resist.

Which CBD Oil Should I Give My Pets?

The first thing you’ll need for making CBD treats at home is CBD oil. Here are some tips you’ll want to follow for choosing the best CBD oil for your pet.

  • Look for Pet CBD — People CBD often has a higher concentration of CBD, as well there are “experimental” forms out there like raw or isolate.
  • Active Full spectrum — Active Full spectrum is raw CBD oil that is heated to activate the cannabinoids and terpenes in the extract. Unlike CBD isolate, full spectrum contains the hemp plant in its entirety. While CBD is the most potent cannabinoid, it has a beneficial relationship with the other 100+ cannabinoids and 200+ terpenes found in hemp. This harmonious relationship extends CBD oil’s therapeutic effects and allows CBD itself to be easily absorbed.
  • Certificate of Analysis (COA) — This will show you the true potency and chemical makeup of the CBD product. It’s undertaken by a 3rd party to prevent manipulation and mislabelling. Don’t buy CBD from a company if you can’t find the COA.

Hempful Tips For Using CBD Oil To Make Edibles

Before we get down to baking, here is a CBD dosage calculator that will help you determine the proper dosage for your pet. You may want to experiment with dosage by just giving your pet plain CBD oil before mixing it into treats.

In the following recipes you will not find how much CBD you should put into the treats. This is because CBD oils for both people and pets have varying concentration levels even when the bottles are the same size. As well, it’s counter-intuitive since one of the main reason to make treats at home is so you can control dosage.

CBD oil will contain a carrier oil such as hempseed oil or coconut oil. As such, you’ll need to reduce any other oils in the recipe. If you see non-CBD oil in the recipe, simply gradually add it in until desired consistency is reached — you’re just making a dough, so it’s easy to experiment.
